Nurse Edith Cavell was shot by the Germans in 1915 for helping Allied prisoners escape and subsequently became a metional heroine.

When the war ended a statue of Nurse Cavell was erected outside the National Portrait Gallery in London. At the unveiling of the statue the artist James Pryde, unconvinced by the sculptor`s work, was heard to remark as the curtains were pulled back, ´My God, they`ve shot the wrong person.`
