Property is theft
At the opening of the Second World War the evacuation of women and children from the big cities into the countryside was not always a happy experience.
A householder who lived alsone in Datchet found that the authories billeted a woman and her eight children from London in his house. Quite unable to cope with the change in his life, he left his house and went to live with his mother, leaving the Londoners in possession of his property. The woman contacted her husband, who had remained behind in London, and he sold their house and moved to Datchet to be with his wife. The new occupanta refused to pay any rent to the owner as they were ´evacuees` and the authorities stopped paying him any allowances for the Londoners as he was no longer in the house himself. Living with his mother actually cost the owner rent which he had to pay to another landlord.
