A clerical error
At public executions in the eighteenth century the mobs that gatherd to watch, and sometimes even the hangman himself, were thoroughly drunk.
In1738, at one execution the hangman, already intoxicated, was convinced that he was supposed to be hanging three men instead of the two who were present to him.As a result he treied to put the rope around the neck of the parson who was attending the two conedemned criminals and was only with difficulty prevented from hanging him as well.
