Irving Cobb was one of the most famous American newspaper reporters. In 1914 his reports from the battlefronts in Frannce and Belgium alerted the worldto German atrocities.

During the First World War Ivong Cobb was in Belgium covering the German invasion with several of his press colleagues. On one occasion he was travelling by taxi to the Belgian Army headquaters when he was capured by the Germans and questioned. The interrogation went on for hours, during which Cobb became increasingly anxious. Finally he called out to the German officer interrogating him, ´Whether or not you intend to shoot us, for God`s sake tell the taxi driver to turn off his meter:`
