October, 20, 2009, Ottawa, ON - What does it take to get an entire school community walking in unity? The 4th Annual Long Walk to Freedom in support of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund.

Teacher organizer, Jeannie Hunter says, “Staff and students will be joined by members of the community, school board officials, representatives from neighbouring universities, and local dignitaries. In addition, this year, a contingent of A. Y. Jackson Secondary School students will join with their Brookfield counterparts as a show of inter-school teamwork – something, Ms. Hunter says speaks well for the District’s commitment to global responsibility.”

The walk begins at Brookfield High School located at 824 Brookfield Road, commencing at 1:45 p.m. on Wednesday, October 21. Students will travel down Brookfield to Riverside, Riverside to Ridgewood, Ridgewood to Springland, then through the back entrance to the football field.
To date just over $4000 has been raised from the annual walks but when you add up all of the events Brookfield students have organized in support of the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund, the tally is closer to $10,000!

Mr. Mandela’s words of encouragement are part of the Brookfield daily culture as students raise money in their period 4 classes by sponsoring daily words of inspiration through "Mandela Minutes".

Following the walk, students will have an opportunity to sign a mural, watch a student-teacher soccer game (this year's world cup is in Johannesburg) or take part in a friendly tug-o-war match. The event celebrates collaboration and cooperation. It reminds Canadian students of just how fortunate they are to live in a country where rights and freedoms are the essence of who they are, and as a result it promotes global citizenship. It does all this while allowing students the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors and each other’s company, according to Ms. Hunter who has been an active teacher participant since the walk began four years ago.
