Wars, fights, arguments etc. – these are the results of all evil, but to eliminate the result you should look at the causes. Many people say that religion is the root of all evil. Normally this
happens in the “western cultures”. So they actually don`t mean religion but Christianity. There are also some who say other religions are the causes of all evil, but I want to take a look at the
Christian religion. I don`t want to say that nothing bad happened, because of religion. The best and I think most discussed example for this are the “crusades” in the Middle Age. I don`t want to
say that it wasn`t bad what happened, but it was just a misunderstanding of the Bible. People interpreted something into the words that isn`t in there anywhere. People thought they acted like God
wanted them to act. They were totally wrong and if they had taken a closer look they would have noticed it right away. But now let us have a look at the real problem. Where does all evilness comes
from? Is it really the religion. To get an answer we should look at the roots. The roots are somewhere in the history. Let us start with a look at the middle age. Religion existed and evil as well.
Many people had to die because the catholic church said they were evil, for example the burning of the witches. I think everybody knows this. It was how the catholic church defined evil. So if they
tried to define something it must have been there before. Let us take another step back in history. The ancient world – Rome is probably the best place to look at, because they had the best
developed culture. Caesar is the most known disposer of this time. Why is that so? – I think because he started many wars. That’s not really nice. You could call it evil. So evilness existed – what
about religion? Yes, religion existed. It´s a different one but at least there is one, but religion is not used as excuse. People prayed their Gods to help them in the fight. So there is a
different connection between religion and evil, but it`s not the root. Maybe we should take a bigger step back. The Stone Age – The only way to figure out if there was evil and religion is to look
at the pieces that are left and found. We need to look at the bones they found and the wall paintings. They found some graves that were like public graves. To explain this it is said that these are
results of wars. – So it`s clear there was evilness. What about religion? How can we find out if there was religion? Every religion has some relicts. There are none found that could belong to the
Stone Age. So there is nothing like religion but there is evilness. How can religion be the root of all evil? Evil existed before religion did. Everything evil (like fighting, stealing, lying etc.)
comes right from the human heart. People should look back into history before they say what the root of something is. People need something to trust in, something that leads them to the right
direction. For many people religion is something like this. The Bible is a book full of examples of what is right and what is wrong. So religion shows what evilness means, but it`s not the root.
And how could it be? Why should it show what evil means if it would be evil in itself? More than the root of all evil it`s a way to escape from evil. Evil is something bad, but how can you avoid
something that is not defined? I will tell you. You can`t avoid it, because you wouldn`t know what actually is evil. Religion tells you what evil means so you can avoid it. People need something
that guides them into the right direction. Religion can do that. That`s why I think Religion is not the root of all evil. Religion defines evil, but the real evilness is deep in everyone’s
heart.
